The Penrose Triangle
Sculpture by Blake Courter and Blake Courtney

Discovered by mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose who promoted it as "impossibility in its purest form," the Penrose Triangle is a 3D illusion offering an escape from rigidity within straight lines.

It’s an aesthetic obsession found in the works of MC Escher, countless tattoos, and between the covers of the tattered notebooks—the simple doodles of teenagers aching to stay awake during 5th period.

It’s an escape from our everyday existence, challenging the ways we examine and navigate our own space, and define what is real and what may not be so real.

Boundaries — age, genre or otherwise — don’t hamper an artist like Sierra Hull. As a player, a singer and a songwriter, Sierra has remarkable range, the potential to win over ears unfamiliar with Bill Monroe and give performances of broad cultural importance, as she’s done at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the National Prayer Breakfast. In May 2011, Sierra completed a two-year degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full, Presidential Scholarship. Matt Glaser — head of Berklee’s American Roots Music Program — put it this way: “She has no limitations as a musician.”

The Makanda Project
The Makanda Project,
an ensemble based in Makanda Ken McIntyre's hometown of Boston, is dedicated to continuing Makanda's legacy through the performance of his music - specifically, by playing compositions which Makanda never had the opportunity to record or perform in public. An enormous body of such work exists, reflecting the full range of Makanda's imagination as a composer. The group hopes that as some of it is heard there will be heightened appreciation for Makanda's significance as a musician.

The band, which was formed in 2005 and has kept mostly the same personnel since then, consists of 13 musicians: 5 saxophones, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, a vocalist, piano, bass, and drums. The leader, pianist John Kordalewski, who studied and performed with Makanda, has written arrangements for the large group, working from the lead sheets in Makanda's notebooks. http://www.mkmjazz.com/makanda-project.php

Safety Last!
Presented in collaboration with ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage, the Berklee Silent Film Orchestra will perform its new original score to the classic Harold Lloyd silent film comedy Safety Last! in Emerson's Cutler Majestic Theater, live-to-picture, at 7:30 pm. The score is made possible through a commission from the Coolidge Corner Theater's Sounds of Silents program.

Safety Last! is widely considered one of the most enduring silent film classics of all time. The film features the acclaimed comedic genius Harold Lloyd and boasts an iconic image of cinematic history – that of Lloyd dangling from a giant clock on the side of a building over a bustling Los Angeles street below. Lloyd, who joins the ranks of silent screen comic greats Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton (and actually led the pact as the biggest box office star), navigated his own hilarious and daring stunt work. The result is a quintessential motion picture treasure, added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry and meticulously preserved for decades by the Harold Lloyd estate. The Coolidge and Cutler Majestic will present a gorgeous new digital restoration from Janus Films, sourced from an original nitrate print.

The Berklee Silent Film Orchestra (BSFO) is dedicated to composing new, original scores for silent feature classics, and performing them live-to-picture. Based at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, in the world’s only undergraduate degree program in film scoring, the student orchestra composes its new works, and performs as an ensemble, under the leadership of Professor of Film Scoring Sheldon Mirowitz (Outside Providence, Missing in America). To date, the BSFO has scored seven iconic silent features (Sunrise, It, Battleship Potemkin, Piccadilly, Faust, Our Hospitality, and Safety Last) all commissioned by the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts, as part of the theater’s Sounds of Silents™ program, which champions silent film music performance. The recipient of a special commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics, the BSFO has also performed in the new Nantucket Dreamland Theater, and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

Blind Boys of Alabama with Anais Mitchell
Nearly seventy-five years after they hit their first notes together, the Blind Boys of Alabama are exceptional not only in their longevity, but also in the breadth of their catalog and their relevance to contemporary roots music. Since 2000, they’ve won five Grammys and four Gospel Music Awards, and have delivered their spiritual message to countless listeners. “We appreciate the accolades and we thank God for them,” says Jimmy Carter, a founding member and the Blind Boys’ leader for five years now. “But we’re not interesting in money or anything other than singing gospel. We had no idea when we started that we would make it this far. The secret to our longevity is, we love what we do. And when you love what you do, that keeps you motivated. That keeps you alive.”

“The most engaging, and in some ways, most original artist currently working in the field of new American ‘folk’ music” INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
Terrific….Mitchell is a skilled storyteller..and her delivery gives an emotional complexity that welcomes and even demands repeated listens.” PITCHFORK

Dark Follies
New Year’s Eve is a night of renewal and starting over, a second chance. It is in this spirit of second chances that we put forth the question: what if the characters, from our most beloved fairy tales, were given that second chance? What if the 13th fairy was invited to Sleeping Beauty’s party? What if Rapunzel was born a boy? Dark Follies presents in street vaudeville style with rhythm, comedy, flow and dance, an original new act: "Choose Your Own Fairy Tale" where the stories begin as familiar tales but the audience will choose where they end...

Hearthbeat is an interactive sonic fireplace. Six organ pipes produce hundreds of tiny jets of flame that dance in concert with sound. Participants can sing, sweep their hand over a synthesizer, or drum out rhythms at a performance podium, and a wall of fire will change shape based on the frequency content of their music.

Roughly 12 feet wide and 5 feet tall, Hearthbeat is a steel sculpture based on the principles of the Rubens' Tube, a classic physics demonstration that converts sound pressure to air pressure and visualizes the result with fire.

Mean Creek

Old Flame Records is pleased to announce the latest release from Boston-based quartet Mean Creek. Local Losers’ eight anthemic tracks clock in at a raucous twenty minutes making for an ultimate ADHD listening experience available on February 18, 2014.

The four members of Mean Creek all grew up together in Massachusetts. Listening to similar sounds from the area, they come from a long tradition of Massachusetts bands who also embraced punk inspired rock music; Mission Of Burma, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., The Lemonheads- all of these bands left a lasting impact on the members of Mean Creek.

“Local Losers” is the latest offering from the band. Eight tracks that go by at break neck speed, played with the kind of desperation & force only a young, hungry rock band can bring; A true reflection of their energetic live show. These are songs about love, confusion, loneliness, and heartbreak. Throughout all of life’s ups and downs, two things have always held true for these four, their music and friendship. It’s the sounds, ideas, and emotions that they create when they are in a room together, and that is what this album is all about.

Patti Smith and Her Band with Dean Wareham
In 1975 Patti Smith’s first recording, Horses, was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2010 at The Library of Congress by the National Recording Preservation Board. Her subsequent albums are Radio Ethiopia, Easter, and Wave, Dream of Life, Gone Again, Peace and Noise, Gung Ho, trampin, Land, twelve, Outside Society, and most currently, Banga. Author of the acclaimed memoir, Just Kids, which chronicled her friendship and journey in art with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith was awarded the 2010 National Book Award. http://www.pattismith.net/

Dean Wareham’s first-ever solo project, 2013’s mini-album Emancipated Hearts finds the former Luna frontman delivering more of the melodic, psychedelic-tinged pop he has built a career around since his early days with the legendary indie rock band, Galaxie 500. His songs, which feature his laid-back, half-lidded vocal delivery, romantic, if often surrealist lyrics, and dreamy, hummable tunes, are practically a genre unto themselves. Emancipated Hearts, produced by Papercuts frontman Jason Quever, showcases all of Wareham’s musical trademarks in abundance. In Quever, Wareham has found a deeply sympathetic producer . . . setting him in what sounds like a large music hall and dressing his songs in layers of ringing guitars, vocal reverb, shimmery keyboards and a delicate assemblage of viola and violin. A gorgeous showcase that brings together everything you’ve ever loved about Wareham’s music, Emancipated Hearts isn’t just a mini-album, it’s a minor masterpiece. — ALL MUSIC GUIDE http://deanwareham.com/

Gentlemen Hall
Gentlemen Hall is six individuals out to deliver pop songs wrapped in unique instrumentation. From flutes to vintage synthesizers, GH is not a typical lineup. Based out of Boston, the band was originally a group of friends with no intentions of making music together.Despite coming from completely different musical backgrounds the sextet was drawn to the the sounds of common artists and found themselves incorporating the implications of the pulsing synth sounds of Depeche Mode, the hallucinatory topics and arrangements of the Flaming Lips, and eclecticism and unique vocal approach of David Bowie.
