The Penrose Triangle
Sculpture by Blake Courter and Blake Courtney

Discovered by mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose who promoted it as "impossibility in its purest form," the Penrose Triangle is a 3D illusion offering an escape from rigidity within straight lines.

It’s an aesthetic obsession found in the works of MC Escher, countless tattoos, and between the covers of the tattered notebooks—the simple doodles of teenagers aching to stay awake during 5th period.

It’s an escape from our everyday existence, challenging the ways we examine and navigate our own space, and define what is real and what may not be so real.

Dark Follies
New Year’s Eve is a night of renewal and starting over, a second chance. It is in this spirit of second chances that we put forth the question: what if the characters, from our most beloved fairy tales, were given that second chance? What if the 13th fairy was invited to Sleeping Beauty’s party? What if Rapunzel was born a boy? Dark Follies presents in street vaudeville style with rhythm, comedy, flow and dance, an original new act: "Choose Your Own Fairy Tale" where the stories begin as familiar tales but the audience will choose where they end...

Temporeal -- This project applies the concept of the wagon-wheel effect, but in a sculptural format. Utilizing the precision of sound, we can control a surreal behavior of just about any material.

Hearthbeat is an interactive sonic fireplace. Six organ pipes produce hundreds of tiny jets of flame that dance in concert with sound. Participants can sing, sweep their hand over a synthesizer, or drum out rhythms at a performance podium, and a wall of fire will change shape based on the frequency content of their music.

Roughly 12 feet wide and 5 feet tall, Hearthbeat is a steel sculpture based on the principles of the Rubens' Tube, a classic physics demonstration that converts sound pressure to air pressure and visualizes the result with fire.

FIGMENT Boston
On New Year's eve, from 7:30 p.m. to midnight, FIGMENT First Night will be a bright light in the heart of the city with fire spinners, fire art and over 15 innovative, interactive art projects on the Boston Common. FIGMENT creates free, volunteer-driven participatory art events that bring together the community in a celebration of art and a culture where everything is possible. At each event, the public is invited to play with art that temporarily transforms public spaces into wildly creative places that disappear without a trace. Over the past four years, FIGMENT Boston has helped bring hundreds of interactive art projects to downtown Boston, inspiring thousands of people to broaden their definition of art by breaking down the wall between spectator and artist and encouraging everyone to participate.
